In the latter decades of the nineteenth century, in the midst of dramatic and far-reaching developments, humanity's ancient relationship with God was at once fractured and renewed. In that momentous century remarkable changes in the areas of science, the arts, religion, and political leadership occurred. Concomitantly, religion underwent highly consequential changes and challenges. These ranged from open rejection of religion and adoption of secularism by many individuals; attempts at modernization, reform, and social activism by some religions; militarism, fundamentalism, and fanaticism in segments of various faith groups; and open debates regarding the legitimacy, usefulness, and necessity of religion. In the midst of the emergence of the age of atheism in the nineteenth century, a new world religion--the Bahá'í Faith--with striking and profound new perspectives on all aspects of life, but especially with regard to human relationships in general, and with God in particular, came into being.
