Gobineau's Religions et Philosophies de l'Asie Mineure (sic) is the locus classicus for these events. Browne preferred the cause of the saintly Subh-i-Ezel, whom Mohammed Ali el-Bab had nominated as his successor, to that of the more forceful half-brother who usurped his place. He gave me copies of all his books as a parting gift [in 1914], and for many years we exchanged Persian greetings on the day of Nauruz.'
