These same elements exist in the Semitic and Far Eastern religions. The so-called Western dualist and Eastern monist traditions are tripartite in character, with monism providing the underlying rationale and unity for dualism. The article reviews the conflict between traditional religious beliefs and modern science concerning the immortality of the soul.
