Sa méthode se veut essentiellement phénoménologique, sans se rattacher à une école déterminée. Il s'agit pour lui de rencontrer le fait religieux en laissant se montrer l'objet religieux tel qu'il se montre à ceux à qui il se montre. Le phénoménologue doit donc devenir l'hôte spirituel de ceux à qui se montre cet objet et en assumer avec eux la charge. Toute considération historique restera donc ici immanente à cet objet, sans lui imposer du dehors quelque catégorie étrangère, considération dialectique ou autre.
