This book begins with the story of a man whom Providence allows, to console him for a mourning that had struck him, to make him grasp "in the splendor of the rising sun ... the sublime reality hidden in us", while he was only a child . This experience, then repeated in other forms, will condition him throughout his life, pushing him towards a passionate spiritual search. Initially he is fascinated by a Pythagorean cenacle which gives him the possibility of enhancing his abilities of spiritual perception through certain forms of total abstraction from the earthly world. In this way he loses the balance between body and soul, creating painful difficulties for himself and his family. Only an encounter at a mature age with the Bahá'í Faith will lead him to find the "faithful haven" he sought, distracting him from the illusory aspects of esoteric mysticism and making him understand the importance of the balance between the spiritual and material elements of life. Only in this way is it possible to achieve true spirituality, that is, the practical expression of the divine attributes of the soul here on earth to "advance a civilization in continuous progress". The second part of the book analyzes his thinking. The most important thing in human life is the spirit. To come to this awareness it is necessary to adhere to a strict observance of the Divine Law clearly set forth by Bahá'u'lláh. This Law asks to be assiduous seekers of the truth and to strive always to act according to virtue, without however neglecting the practices of meditation and prayer. Only by doing so, we come to open the eye of the heart, understood as an organ of spiritual knowledge, we become aware of the presence of God in all things and we acquire the inner calm necessary to overcome the dark forces of the ego that distract us. from living an authentically human life. This is the ultimate goal that it is possible to reach in this earthly phase of our existence.
