Qurrat al-'Ayn, was the leader of the Babi messianic movement, which is considered the most important religious current in the modern history of Shia Islam. From 1844-1850 this revolutionary movement caused widespread unrest across the country and finally came to a tragic end. Qurrat al-'Ayn was a revolutionary and talented woman who fought against the prejudices of the patriarchal society in which she lived. She was despised and condemned by some and treated with endless praise and admiration by others. Muslim historians and narrators made polemical judgments about her, accusing her of heresy and immorality and the pursuit of boundless freedom. Historians, in turn, revered her and gave her the status of a saint. Her name was equated with those of other holy figures such as the Virgin Mary and the Prophet's daughter, Fatima. She was even referred to as the Persian "Jeanne d'Arc". The fight for emancipation and equality was and is counted among their motives for action. She is therefore often portrayed as a feminist heroine and pioneer of the western women's movement.
