Jerusalem verbindet Erwartungen und Hoffnungen der klassischen monotheistischen Religionen Judentum, Christentum und Islam, sowie der im 19. Jahrhundert daraus hervorgegangenen Religion der Bahaʼi. Realgeschichtliche Stadt und Symbol in einem, ist Jerusalem ein Ort der Faszination, geprägt durch die Leerstelle des Tempels ebenso wie durch die Präsenz von Grabeskirche und Felsendom. In Pilgerfahrten bereist, wurde es in Nachbauten nach Europa, Asien und Lateinamerika geholt. Die fünf Studien dieses Bandes gehen verschiedenen mit der Heiligen Stadt verbundenen Geschichten nach und entfalten dabei ein Panorama, in dem erstaunliche Entsprechungen und bemerkenswerte Ungleichheiten zusammengehören. Der Schwerpunkt der Untersuchungen liegt auf dem Mittelalter und der frühen Neuzeit, aber die Spuren führen weiter bis ins 21. Jahrhundert hinein. Jerusalem combines the expectations and hopes of the classic monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, as well as the Bahaʼi religion that emerged from them in the 19th century. Real historical city and symbol in one, Jerusalem is a place of fascination, characterized by the empty space of the temple as well as by the presence of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Dome of the Rock. Traveled on pilgrimages, it was brought to Europe, Asia and Latin America in replicas. The five studies in this volume trace different stories related to the Holy City, unfolding a panorama in which astonishing correspondences and striking disparities belong together.
