General note Der Bahá'í-Glaube ist heute die geographisch am weitest verbreitete Religion nach dem Christentum. Welche Garantien der individuellen Religionsfreiheit das Völkerrecht gewährt, ist für sie daher von besonderer Bedeutung. Dies vor allem deshalb, da einige Staaten derzeit durch ihre nationale Gesetzgebung keinen ausreichenden Schutz für die Angehörigen dieser Weltreligion bieten. In seinem Ursprungsland, dem Iran, wird der Bahá'í-Glaube seit seiner Entstehung verfolgt. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht neben dem universellen Völkerrecht die wichtigsten regionalen Menschenrechtsabkommen. Dabei wird dargelegt, welche Rechte dem einzelnen Gläubigen zustehen und welche Rechte einer Religionsgemeinschaft gewährt werden. Als weiterer Schwerpunkt wird erörtert, ob die traditionell islamische Auffassung zur Religionsfreiheit als regionales Völkerrecht angesehen werden kann. Diese Fragestellung ist nicht zuletzt deshalb interessant, da diese traditionelle Sichtweise die Hauptursache für die Verfolgungen der Bahá'í im Iran ist.

Formatted contents note The Bahá'í Faith is today the most widespread religion geographically after Christianity. It is therefore of particular importance to them which guarantees of individual religious freedom are granted by international law. This is mainly because some states currently do not offer sufficient protection for the members of this world religion through their national legislation. In its country of origin, Iran, the Bahá'í Faith has been persecuted since its inception. In addition to universal international law, the present study examines the most important regional human rights treaties. It explains what rights the individual believer is entitled to and what rights are granted to a religious community. As a further focus, it will be discussed whether the traditional Islamic view of religious freedom can be regarded as regional international law. This question is interesting not least because this traditional view is the main reason for the persecution of the Bahá'ís in Iran.
